Examples of recent work

DH or DfES funded improvement work has included:

  • Supporting Adult Services staff in a unitary council to develop their strategic and business planning arrangements, and improve the review system;

  • Providing an analysis of the access and assessment arrangements in a Children’s Directorate, plus practical solutions for auditing and improving their case file recording and policies and procedures;

  • Developing systems to improve data accuracy and performance, including the application of FACS, in a county council’s Adult Service;

  • Supporting a unitary authority to improve commissioning for older people and learning disability services, and to improve performance on reviews; and

  • Providing challenge to the development of an Improvement Plan in a unitary council, and appraising the current budget data and making recommendations for improvement of presentation based on discussions with staff.

Reviews, inspections and investigations

  • Individually, the Partners have all been members of the Audit Commission/SSI Joint Review Team and led reviews in England and Wales, including recent Reviews for SSIW in Wales;
  • Two Partners have also led/been team members of CPA assessments.
  • All partners have investigated complaints at stage 3 on behalf of CSCI, and one Partner regularly chairs Review Panels;
  • Two partners have led inspections for SSI/CSCI covering all aspects of children’s services and adult social care; and
  • Chaired Serious Case Reviews.

Developing and supporting people:  

  • Since 2005, Partners have delivered a mentoring/coaching development programme to first-line managers, senior practitioners and business managers in four authorities. The aim of the programme is to provide a learning environment in which managers reflect upon their performance; share their successes and concerns, and become more confident. The programme is adapted to the individual setting; and

  • Delivering refresher training and support to policy review of the implementation of FACS criteria.
